LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Is the Wii U right for you?

At last year's Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), Nintendo captured most of the spotlight by unveiling the Wii's successor, a high-definition console called the Wii U that utilizes a tablet-like touchscreen controller. Attention alone wasn't enough to declare a victory. Folks weren't, well, feeling it. Critical reaction was mixed, and the Japanese gaming giant's stock dropped.

"Nintendo has an uphill battle this year," said Morgan Webb, co-host of the G4 gaming show "X-Play." ''It's really a branding problem. I think a lot of people are still confused about the Wii U. They're going to have a hard time convincing people that this could be a better gaming experience than the iPad."

At this year's E3 convention in Los Angeles next week, Nintendo Co. will attempt to assuage such concerns by introducing gamers to titles that will be available for Wii U when it's expected to launch later this year. Previously, the "Mario Bros." creator only teased what was capable through a series of technology demonstrations.

E3 comes at a time when the gaming industry could use a few good parties and pep talks. The NPD Group, a research firm that tracks the U.S. sales of game software, hardware and accessories, said that while consumers spent more than $1 billion on games and accompanying gizmos in April, retail sales fell 32 percent from a year ago, the fifth month of decline.

The continued interest in cheaper-to-produce mobile, social and downloadable games is expected to be showcased more than ever before at E3, a flashy extravaganza typically focused on building buzz for the loudest and sexiest games. Zynga, the developer of social games like "FarmVille" and "Words With Friends," will have a presence at E3 for the first time.

"Every time I go to E3, I'm usually surprised," said Jay Wilson, lead designer of the role-playing game "Diablo III." ''I expect to be surprised again. What I hope is that no matter what platform people are working on, no matter what new area that they're exploring, the most important thing is gameplay. If a game provides great gameplay, the platform doesn't really matter."

Indeed, a strong line-up of games will be integral to the future success of the Wii U, a lesson Nintendo learned the hard way after last year's lackluster launch of the 3DS, its glasses-free 3-D handheld device. "X-Play's" Webb thinks Nintendo could win over the E3 crowd if it introduces innovative, unexpected, must-own games that appeal equally to both hardcore and casual gamers.

Unless Nintendo's fellow first-party publishers Sony Corp. or Microsoft Corp. unveil new hardware or radical updates to their respective PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles, the E3 spotlight ? for better or worse ? will undoubtedly be shining back in Nintendo's direction. (Microsoft and Sony have previously shot down rumors they'd unleash new consoles at this year's E3.)

"The Wii U was announced last year, and that stimulates all kinds of thoughts about what's possible," said Mark Lamia, the studio head at "Call of Duty: Black Ops II" developer Treyarch. "It'll be interesting to see what happens with the first parties. It's always an exciting time when rumors are in the air, and we see if E3 is the time when they become more than rumors."

Most other game makers will use the expo to hype new entries in their seemingly never-ending franchises. There's Activision's "Call of Duty: Black Ops II," Microsoft's "Halo 4" and "Forza Horizon," Sony's "God of War: Ascension" and "LittleBigPlanet Karting," Ubisoft's "Far Cry 3" and "Assassin's Creed III," as well as the revealing of several other new chapters.

Some sequels at E3 are emerging from deep within the vault. Franchises once considered extinct, such as invasion simulator "X-COM," stealthy shooter "Hitman" and town builder "SimCity," will return to a vastly different landscape. Will these once beloved series be re-embraced? It's a strategy that's worked for some ("Twisted Metal") but failed others ("Syndicate").

Electronic Arts Inc. will show off such games as the real-world military simulator "Medal of Honor: Warfighter," a new iteration of its "Need for Speed" racing series and the sci-fi horror sequel "Dead Space 3." EA, like many publishers, will also be talking technology, focusing on advancements with its Frostbite graphics engine, digital distribution and cloud computing

"Cloud competing isn't rocket science," said Patrick Soderlund, executive vice president at the EA Games label. "It is a great feature that we're embracing as a game company. It's just a natural evolution that I think will be used in most of our products, to some extent."

Home Improvement Projects Can Be A Pain. These Tips Will Make ...

You should periodically hire a contractor to inspect your chimney for hazards and clean out any debris. This is very important if you use wood to heat your home, but still important if you do not. You will want to avoid the potential for a chimney fire or the accumulation of toxic fumes that can?t escape your home.

Remove or secure the extra cord or loops on your window blinds. Children and pets can become entangled in these cords and strangle. Make sure that you leave enough cord to allow you to move blinds the way that they are meant to move. You should tie it up or snip it off before it becomes an accident.

If hard water is an issue, begin with this tip. Invest in a water softener so that your water is filtered. Magnesium and calcium deposits that cause water hardness are removed from water when a water softener is used. Many types of softeners are available to choose from. Find the one that best suits you.

Never let a contractor start work without having a signed contract. You may even be better off if the contract is looked over by an attorney before the first hammer is raised. Look over things like the amount, completion dates, and anything else that you want to look over.

Having the right tools is essential when you are doing renovations. Using the proper tools will ensure that your work is completed well and with greater efficiency. Knowing how to correctly use the tool also makes a difference in getting the job done right.

Bear in mind that different home improvement applications call for different kinds of screws. It is important to know the right types of screws needed for your particular projects. For projects that involve wood, wood screws are ideal, because they can easily penetrate the material. When you are working with sheet metal you should use the appropriate screws.

When thinking of replacing your cabinets, try using wood cabinets. Wood cabinets are strong, so they can put up with a lot of usage without showing wear. Wood that is often used in cabinetry is maple, oak, or cherry. One additional benefit of these woods is that they take stains well. This makes it relatively easy to alter the color scheme of your cabinets.

Try looking at YouTube videos of the project you want to tackle. When searching, be very specific, including model numbers and your specific project. It is amazing to find that many others have run into similar problems and that they have videotaped the way they handled the problem and then put it online. Once you take the time to watch their video, you can learn from their experiences.

Painting your walls will give your house a refreshing atmosphere without spending a lot of money. Visit your local home improvement center to look at paint samples. Find the ones that are fun and exciting for you! The neat thing about painting is that you can re-paint if you don?t like the results.

Now you know how much fun it can be to make home improvements. Home improvement projects could be a lot of fun to people that are trying to improve their house on their own. Keep these tips top of mind, and soon you will be mastering projects like a pro.

Tackling residence improvement projects might be a frustrating and drawn-out process; but when carried out appropriate it could completely change the appear and feel of the property. Doing the remodeling yourself may be almost impossible in the event you do not have the time or know-how to acquire it completed, so in case you can afford to, I always recommend just hiring a pro to manage it for you personally. If you want the job carried out correct and accomplished speedily, withought finding overcharged, you?ll need to employ the pros at Xtreme Remodeling! William Bradley: Fiat Lux, Willard!

Amazingly, Mitt Romney has not one but two Harvard degrees. (Unfortunately for Harvard.)

On Thursday, during his California fundraising swing, Romney made a surprise, secret visit to the shuttered Fremont plant of Solyndra, the late solar firm which got a half billion in loans from the Obama Administration before going under in the face of cut-throat pricing from Chinese firms.

Trying desperately to turn attention away from attacks on his record as a corporate takeover specialist at Bain Capital, and from his close embrace of birther billionaire Donald Trump -- the presumptive Republican nominee celebrated his clinching the party nomination Tuesday night at Trump's casino on the Vegas Strip -- Romney declared that Solyndra is "Obama's Taj Mahal."

His Taj Mahal?

Romney's Harvard degrees are in business and law. He's a professional man, not an intellectual. (Maybe that's why he rips Barack Obama for being "too Harvard" when he's spent the most time at the place. He only used the specialty libraries.)

Still, even though he is no intellectual, he should know what the Taj Mahal is before he invokes it in such a pointed yet fundamentally goofy way.

The United Nations, placing the Taj Mahal on the World Heritage List, describes it thus: "The Taj Mahal is the jewel of Muslim art in India and one of the universally admired masterpieces of the world's heritage."

Is Romney really saying that the shutdown Solyndra plant is an aesthetic masterpiece, one of the greatest places in the world?

Yeah, probably not.

Romney simply doesn't know what he is saying.

Again.

No wonder Romney has aligned himself so closely with the anti-Enlightenment forces in America -- birthers, evolution deniers, greenhouse deniers, anti-solar types, the drill baby drill crowd who don't get that oil is a global market so even more drilling here won't drop the price of gasoline, etc.

Jefferson and Franklin would roll over in their graves listening to this gabble.

Romney's visit to the Taj Mahal of Fremont, and his latest adventure in talking like the Harvard he went to is Harvard Junior High in East Nowheresville, came after a big fundraiser Wednesday night at the 65,000 square foot Chateau Carolands in Hillsborough. The gardens are modeled after those at Versailles.

Now that is one famous place that Romney actually knows about. (A superhawk today, he was a Mormon missionary in France during his prime military-eligible years in the Vietnam War, which he strongly advocated.)

"Corporations are people, my friend." Let them eat cake!

PS4 Rumor Mill: Anonymous Source States 2013 Release & Disc ...

Despite the constant dispelling of rumors by Sony Computer Entertainment America, there are still those that feel adamant that the Playstation 4 will see the light of day in the next year. A recent communication between an unnamed source and the Wall Street Journal kicked up the rumor mill once more with a tip that Sony would be releasing its next generation console only a year after SCEA?s president Andrew House shot down the idea of the PS4 by stating, ?I don?t think we?re contemplating talking about anything to do with future console iterations at this point.?

After the release of the Playstation 3, Sony went on record to say that it would be implementing a 10 year lifecycle for its current console. As the Playstation 3 launched in 2006, the hardware should still have a good solid 3 years before being replaced by yet another generation of gaming. With the announcement of such anticipated titles as God of War: Ascension, it would seem like a fruitless maneuver for Sony to not release the next installment of one of the developer?s best selling series on its newest hardware, especially since it would be one of the first system launches to showcase a game so popular that it could probably aid in increasing system sales at launch.

One interesting fact stated by the WSJ?s anonymous source was that early rumors of a download-only console were far from mere fabrications. Sony?s consideration for disc-less compatibility was apparently dropped in favor of the more traditional methods due to a growing concern over the reliability of individual internet connections and the potential instability of bandwidth. If these rumors happen to be true, Sony?s change of heart may have come off the heels of its failed PSP Go system, which released in 2009 to abysmal sales that continued well into 2011.

E3 2012 is less than a week away, so many can expect to see more rumors like this popping up until Sony?s official press conference during the trade show. Only after the closing words of the conference are spoken will people know the truth and reality behind the numerous Playstation 4 rumors that have been plaguing the internet in the past year. Clearly, if there?s no mention of the system by the close of June 7th, than the constant barrage of rumors should take a much needed break as few companies would miss the opportunity to showcase their newest hardware at one of the industries? biggest events

Unfortunately, in an trade plagued by secrets just waiting to be cracked, there are bound to be those that wish to stir the pot, even if there is little to no evidence behind what they?re spewing. Seeing as how Sony has been adamantly refuting all claims to the Playstation 4 over the past year, it?s time for the PS4 rumor mill to take a much needed rest.
