White Bird Dance review: Garth Fagan's 'Griot New York' shows ...

In many traditional societies of West Africa, a griot is the voice of the culture, a storyteller, historian and commentator. As described in program notes to ?Griot New York,? the 1991 collaboration between the choreographer Garth Fagan, the jazz composer Wynton Marsalis and the sculptor Martin Puryear, it refers to someone who preserves and transmits people?s history and traditions in song, dance and verse.

?Griot New York,? which the strikingly talented ensemble of Garth Fagan Dance performed at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall on Wednesday night, is Fagan?s contemporary take on that ancient function, a series of heartfelt, at once earthy and poetic dances that carry a sense of African and African-American identity amid what the presenting company White Bird describes as a ?tribute to the look and sound of the pulsating city.?

What specific stories or commentaries Fagan might intend isn?t always clear -- perhaps that?s for the best. ?The Disenfranchised,? which opened the second half of the program, came closest to social commentary, with dancers stumbling around languidly in tattered clothing, looking a bit like a very attractive zombie underclass.

Rather, the riches of ?Griot New York? are in the execution more than the concept. As the esteemed dance critic Martha Ullman West remarked during intermission Wednesday, what was most notable in Fagan?s choreography and the performance of his troupe was the remarkable musicality of the dancing.

Perhaps, though, this is as much part of Fagan?s concept as any narrative or metaphorical trappings. As he once put it in a segment for the public television series ?Dance in America,? his dancers ?dance from the inside out...I want to see the soul behind the movement.?

Which could be one way of describing what it means for dance to have musicality.

We might also look to notions of fluency and fluidity, to the subtleties of articulation and embellishment. Both music and dance concern time and motion, and work best when the those two phenomena seem married, indivisible.

In any case, you could see musicality -- and understand intuitively that there?s nothing paradoxical about the phrase -- in the dizzyingly quick turns the dancers made as the whipped across the stage in the playful opener ?City Court Dance.? Or, from that same piece, in the joyful hop, executed with one leg kicking high in the air, that looked like a modernist borrowing from the Lindy Hop. Or in the exquisite tonal control (a function of strength, balance and a keen sense of expressive understatement) shown by Norwood Pennewell and Nicolette Depass in the slow, tender duet ?Spring Yaounde.?? Or the sinuous, casually sexy, hip-rotating walk that gave a distinctly Caribbean feel to ?Oracabessa Sea.?

Perhaps the secret skill of the griot lies less in what you say than how you say it.

British PM issues racism warning

By ROB HARRIS

updated 12:52 p.m. ET Feb. 22, 2012

LONDON - British Prime Minister David Cameron asked England's soccer leaders Wednesday to provide a plan to deal with racism in the sport after a series of high-profile cases involving the Premier League.

Cameron addressed soccer leaders and anti-racism campaigners at a summit on Downing Street, warning that abusive behavior by soccer stars is imitated by youngsters and must be stopped.

"We have some problems still today," Cameron said. "We need to act quickly to make sure those problems do not creep back in ... if everyone plays their role, then we can easily crush and deal with this problem."

The English Football Association must provide a full report detailing how racism and other forms of discrimination can be combatted.

"We have committed to coming back with a detailed followup to this in two months," FA chairman David Bernstein said.

The government announced Wednesday it will give $4.7 million toward the English Football Association's new coaching center in a bid to encourage more people from ethnic minorities to become managers. There are no black managers in the Premier League.

In July, John Terry will become the first high-profile soccer player to stand trial for racial abuse following a confrontation with Queens Park Rangers defender Anton Ferdinand in October. The Chelsea player was stripped of the England captaincy this month in a move opposed by coach Fabio Capello, who quit in protest.

Sport Secretary Jeremy Hunt said after Wednesday's summit that soccer needs to address "how we draw the line between banter and offensive language."

Liverpool, the 18-time English champion, was criticized for its support of striker Luis Suarez when he was banned for eight matches after racially abusing Manchester United defender Patrice Evra in October.

Liverpool, owned by the parent company of the Boston Red Sox, was condemned by anti-racism groups for backing Suarez and allowing players and manager Kenny Dalglish to wear T-shirts featuring Suarez's picture in a show of solidarity before a match weeks later.

This month, Suarez was criticized for refusing to shake hands with Evra before match in their first meeting since the confrontation. He apologized later under pressure.

"What happens on the field influences what happens off the field. You see children as young as 6 imitating the behavior they see on the field," Cameron said. "So this is not just important for football ? it's important for the whole country ... we want to make sure football is all about a power to do good, rather than anything else."

The meeting also dealt with the lingering problem of homophobia in soccer.

Amal Fashanu attended the summit. She recently made a documentary for British TV about homosexuality in soccer, 14 years after her uncle Justin committed suicide.

The career of Fashanu, the first black player to move in a 1 million-pound transfer when he joined Nottingham Forest in 1981, faded after he publicly acknowledged his homosexuality. He was found hanged in a London garage in 1998 at 37.

"Potentially, gay people don't want to be become Premier League footballers because they are intimidated by the atmosphere ... or they don't think the environment makes it possible for them," Hunt said.

On Wednesday, West Ham midfielder Ravel Morrison was fined $11,000 by the FA for using a gay slur on Twitter.

Cameron described homophobia in soccer as a largely taboo topic.

"It's obviously quite unlikely that there are no gay Premiership players, and that tells you something about the tolerance within the game," said Steve Field, Cameron's spokesman.

Fohnhouse.com | Movies, TV, Art & Entertainment: The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2012)

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2012)

When you see a cast list like this on a poster covered in smiling faces and sunshine, it?s tough not to make a couple of assumptions. First: they probably had a great time making it. Second: it might best be suited for a Sunday afternoon DVD viewing rather than a trip to the cinema. But we put assumptions aside to check it out.
A group of retirees decide to relocate to a retirement hotel in India. Widowed Evelyn (Judi Dench) wants a new start. Douglas (Bill Nighy) and Jean (Penelope Wilton) are desperate to avoid the depressing English old folk?s home. Madge (Celie Imrie) is looking for a wealthy new husband, while Norman (Ronald Pickup) is looking for a last fling. Graham (Tom Wilkinson) is looking to reconnect with a childhood love, while racist Muriel (Maggie Smith) is reluctantly going to get a hip operation. But while the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel may be unfinished, owner Sonny (Dev Patel) is desperate to succeed and prove his worth to his girlfriend, his mother, and himself. As we said, you?ve got some idea of what you?re getting with a film like this. You?ve got the quality cast, you?ve got the fish-out-water plot with the English thesps exploring the exotic locale, and you?ve got a big heart beneath it all. We can report that, in the best possible sense, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is what you?d expect. The cast is excellent and the script by Ol Parker (based on the novel These Foolish Things by Deborah Moggach) is witty and provides a couple of much-appreciated twists on a familiar formula. It?s refreshing to see a film about the issues facing retirees today even if John Madden is occasionally guilty of getting too close to shooting a tourism advert for India.Dench enjoys a rare lead and, after so many films that have taken advantage of her frostiness, it?s nice to see her show her softer side. Nighy plays the down-trodden but slowly blooming Douglas very nicely, though it would have been better if Wilton?s spiteful Jean was a little more developed. Wilkinson does lovelorn well, and Imrie and Pickup have great fun as the prowling senior singles. Finally there?s Patel (Slumdog Millionaire), who gives an energetic, funny and appealing turn as the desperate but determined Sonny, and Dame Maggie Smith, the not-so-secret weapon, puncturing the general air of luvviness beautifully as the acidic Muriel. At two hours it stretches the material a little thin but it?s difficult to complain too much when the time is spent in such good company.? It may not be especially challenging or surprising but it?s an tremendously warm, pleasant, and enjoyable film.Verdict: In the best possible way, it?s exactly what you?d expect.

This contains $14.6 billion in direct institutional expenditures and $4.0 billion spent by students on expenses other than tuition essential to attend the institutions. Moreover, the sector generated $3.five billion in secondary earnings gains, defined here as the increase in private sector college or university graduate salaries, and $16.five billion in indirect economic activity associated with the industries in which graduates are employed.

Over three million students attended accredited private sector college or universities in 2008-2009, which represents about 12% with the total marketplace of practically 27.5 million students. As a common rule, private sector colleges and universities are much more expensive than community colleges and public four-year institutions and less pricey than private non-profit colleges and universities.

Private sector college and university students frequently finance their education having a combination of Federal (Pell Grants) and state and neighborhood government grants, government subsidized and unsubsidized loans (Stafford Loans) and private banking loans. Sadly, federal and state assistance for higher education has not kept pace with inflation and the difference between Pell Grant and Stafford Loan funding amounts and tuition and associated fees can leave a funding gap. This gap might be addressed by PLUS Loans, exactly where parents agree to co-sign for the student, commercial marketplace loans and self financing.

According to the U.S. Department of Education?s National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), fall 2008, 60% of private sector college or university students who attended 2-year institutions graduate within six years of enrolling. At community colleges, more than the exact same time span, 22% in the students graduate. Also, from 2008-2009 NCES information, PSCUs award 16% of all postsecondary degrees and certificates even though enrolling just under 12% of all postsecondary students. What?s the student?s return on investment for a private sector college or university education? In salary terms alone, in 2007, the median annual earnings of adults with some college or an associate?s degree was $40,769 versus $32,862 for their high school graduate counterparts. The typical rate of return on a student?s investment is 24%.10.

In summary private sector colleges and universities possess a lot to offer by indicates of an extra choice towards pursuing the education for your career dreams. You are able to never ever go wrong when searching for to bettering yourself by signifies of getting more education. Private sector programs offer a powerful background for all those who older and are already operating, but not within a desirable position and need to much better their scenario. There is fantastic benefit despite the fact that the expense can be a little much more than a community college but in today?s job market employers favor those with career precise skills which usually demand above average spend.

HBT: Damon won't be signing with Yankees

Jon Heyman is still doing his best to find Johnny Damon a job, but it won?t be with the Yankees.

General manager Brian Cashman told George King of the New York Post that Damon contacted the Yankees looking for work and ?I told him the truth ? he is not the No. 1 option if and when I turn to DH options.?

Or as Damon put it: ?We both are looking at other options now.?

Damon is no longer an impact hitter, but neither is the guy the Yankees are said to be pursuing, Raul Ibanez. In fact, last season Ibanez hit .245 with a .707 OPS in 144 games for the Phillies and Damon hit .261 with a .743 OPS in 150 games for the Rays. Damon is also two years younger, so either he?s looking for significantly more money than Ibanez or the Yankees simply don?t want anything to do with a reunion.

Food Frauds that can Wreck your Diet

?

Caesar Salad
Some foods that we think are healthy can be sneaky little diet wreckers. University of Pittsburgh nutritionist Leslie Bonci, MPH, RD, shares a few of these ?food frauds,? starting with Caesar salad. Just a small bowl has 300 to 400 calories and 30 grams of fat, thanks to loads of dressing.
Food Fix: Use only 1 Tbsp of dress and 2 Tbsp of tangy, Parmesan cheese.

Fresh Smoothies
That ?healthy? berry blend at a smoothie shop can have a whopping 80 grams of sugar, 350 calories or more, little protein and often no fresh fruit. Fruit ?concentrates? are often used instead of fresh fruit. And sorbet, ice cream and sweeteners can make these no better than a milkshake.
Food Fix: Get the ?small? cup. Ask for fresh fruit, low-fat yogurt, milk or protein powder to blend in protein and good nutrition.

Energy Bars
Many of these are simply enhanced candy bars with more calories (up to 500) and a higher price tag. Their compact size also leaves many people unsatisfied. ?Three bites and it?s gone,? says Bonci, who advises hungry athletes and dancers.
Food Fix: Choose bars that have 200 calories or less, at least 5 grams of protein and some fiber, which helps provide energy when the sugar rush fades.

Chicken Burrito
With healthy beans and no red meat, what?s the problem? About 1,000 calories and plenty of saturated fat: cheese, sour cream and the fat in the jumbo flour tortilla all contribute. And when the burrito is as big as your forearm, the serving is just too big.
Food Fix: Share one. Or try a soft taco with fajita-style grilled meats and veggies on a corn tortilla with tasty, low-calorie salsa.

A Sugar-Free Dilemma
Sugar-free foods sound like a no-brainer for weight loss. But a problem arises when we choose an artificially-sweetened food or drink, then feel that we deserve a large order of fries or jumbo dessert. Upsizing the fries adds nearly 300 calories to your meal. If your calorie intake exceeds what you burn off, you?ll still gain weight, and you can?t blame the sugar-free foods.
Food Fix: Watch your total calorie intake.

Enhanced Water
Vitamins are commonly added to bottled water and advertised on the front label. But some brands also add sugar, taking water from zero calories to as much as 125. ?Often the vitamins don?t contribute much,? Bonci says, ?but the calories can contribute a lot.?
Food Fix: Refrigerating tap water may make it more appealing to family members. Or try packets of crystallized lemon to add flavor without calories.

2% Milk
Two percent milk sounds healthier than ?whole? milk. But it still has more than half the saturated fat of whole milk. Here?s what?s in a cup of milk: Whole Milk (3.25%)=150cal, 8g fat, 5g sat fat; Reduced-Fat (2%)=130 cal, 5g fat, 3g sat fat; Skim=80 cal, 0g fat, 0g sat fat
Food Fix: If you like whole milk, blend it with 2% for awhile, then 1%, then skim, until you get used to the taste of nonfat milk.

Turkey Hot Dogs
The nutritional content of turkey hot dogs varies from brand to brand?and some are real turkeys when it comes to health. It may say ?less fat? on the front label, but when you check the fine print on the back, you find there?s still plenty of fat left in each sausage.
Food Fix: Compare nutrition labels for the lowest fat content; there are some really good choices now available. Or only eat them a few times a year.

Low-Fat Yogurt
Too often this nutritional superstar, rich in protein and calcium, contains shocking amounts of added sugar. Some brands add 30 or more grams of fructose, sucrose or other sweeteners. Compare plain to fruited yogurts to see the difference between naturally-occurring milk sugar and added sugar listed on the nutrition facts panel.
Food Fix: Six ounces should be 90 to 130 calories and under 20g of sugar. Avoid sugary ?fruit on the bottom,? or blend sweetened yogurt with plain, nonfat yogurt.

Multigrain
When you see ?multigrain? or ?seven grain? on bread, pasta or waffles, flip the package over and check the nutrition label. Even with more than one type of grain, the product could be made largely from refined grains, such as white flour, which have been stripped of fiber and many nutrients.
Food Fix: Look for 100% whole grain as the first ingredient. Or choose the brand with more fiber.

Light Olive Oil
Anything labeled ?light? is enticing when you?re watching your weight. But often the food is not what you expect. Light olive oil, for instance, has the same calorie and fat content as other types.? It?s just lighter in color and taste.
Food Fix: Some light foods do provide significant calorie savings. Compare the labels in the store.

Microwave Popcorn
The word ?snack? can be a little misleading on microwave popcorn. One popular brand packs 9g of bad fat, including 6 g of trans fat into each ?snack-size? bag.
Food Fix: Compare nutrition labels and get a lower-fat popcorn that has no trans fat at all. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese or low-salt spice blends for added flavor without a lot of fat.

Coleslaw
Cabbage can be dandy for weight loss, but cole slaw can be a diet disaster. At one popular restaurant, a small cup (4.5oz) has 260 calories and 21g of fat?a third of most people?s daily limit?thanks to copious mayonnaise.
Food Fix: Some places make a healthier slaw, so ask for nutrition information. At home, try low-fat mayonnaise or mix with nonfat yogurt.

Heineken 2011 earnings fall, plans cost-cutting (AP)

AMSTERDAM ? Heineken NV, Europe's largest brewer by sales, reported a fall in profits in 2011 due to rising costs, though a thirst for its beer in developing markets kept revenues buoyant.

The company said Wednesday that net profit over the year fell 1.4 percent to euro1.43 billion ($1.88 billion), from euro1.45 billion in 2010, hit by restructuring costs, higher commodity and labor costs, and higher taxes.

Revenues grew 6.2 percent, boosted by the acquisition in April 2010 of Mexican brands including Sol, Dos Equis and Tecate.

Heineken said revenues grew 3.6 percent excluding the impact of acquisitions, as increases in Eastern Europe, Africa and Asia offset stagnation in Western Europe, where British consumers in particular avoided the company's Strongbow cider.

Heineken also owns the Newcastle, Amstel, and Birra Moretti brands, among others. Volume increases accounted for 2.1 percent of the revenue rise while prices hikes made up the balance.

Analysts said the company's earnings were better than expected and shares rose 4.6 percent to euro38.23 in Amsterdam trading. Shares are down 12 percent since May 2011.

"Earnings in Western Europe have been supported by cost savings," said analyst Richard Withagen of SNS Security, who rates shares a Hold. He noted that the company's performance was better than it had itself indicated after the first half.

Heineken said operating profit would have risen 2.8 percent to euro2.70 billion under its preferred measure, which ignores "exceptional" costs and gains, including the costs of its ongoing restructuring programs, as well as the cost of writing down the value of acquisitions for which it paid more than book value. Heineken said net exceptional operating costs were euro110 million greater in 2011 than in 2010.

Actual operating profit fell 1.4 percent to euro2.46 billion.

A recovery in Russia accounted for fully a third of Heineken's volume growth. Meanwhile, Vietnam has become the second-largest market for Heineken-branded beer.

In the U.S., sales of Heineken shrank but Mexican brands, notably Dos Equis, grew.

Heineken didn't issue a profit forecast for this year, but a similar pattern to 2011 appears likely as the company said it expects a new 6 percent rise in raw materials costs in 2012, mostly due to higher malted barley prices.

The company hopes to absorb the impact again by increasing sales and cutting costs, including an unspecified number of employees.

In 2011, it cut 1,134 jobs and employed slightly fewer than 70,000 by the year's end.

Heineken Chief Executive Officer Jean-Francois van Boxmeer said the company's strategy is to "invest in emerging markets to maintain our growth" while focusing on the marketing and packaging necessary to sell more of its high-margin brands in Europe. Heineken bought the "official beer supplier" concession for the Olympic games in London this summer.

The company said capital spending would increase to euro1.25 billion in 2012 from euro800 million last year, "reflecting investment in additional capacity and the renewal and expansion of its returnable bottle fleet in higher growth markets."

Heineken is also part owner of the Kingfisher, Tiger and Anchor brands via joint ventures. The family-controlled company reports earnings twice annually.

Iraqi-born Islamist cleric in Norway terror trial (AP)

OSLO, Norway ? An Iraqi-born cleric pleaded not guilty in a Norwegian court Wednesday to charges of making death threats against politicians and encouraging suicide bombings.

Prosecutors said Mullah Krekar, a 55-year-old Islamist who came to Norway as a refugee in 1991, faces several years in prison if found guilty.

Since his arrival, Krekar has made frequent trips to Iraq where he founded the Kurdish Ansar al-Islam, listed as a terrorist organization by the United States and other nations. It is suspected of organizing suicide bombings against coalition forces in Iraq.

In 2005, a Norwegian court declared him a national security threat and ordered him deported, but later postponed the move because of concerns he could face execution or torture in Iraq.

Prosecutor Marit Bakkevig told the court Wednesday that Krekar had violated Norwegian terror laws by making threats that "were meant to cause fear in society" and force officials to halt the deportation order.

"The statements appear as persistent threats," she said.

Two years ago, Krekar told foreign reporters in Oslo that if he were deported to Iraq and killed, Norwegian officials would "pay with their lives," according to a transcript included in the indictment presented in court.

Charges also include comments Krekar made on NBC's news program "The Wanted" in 2009. He said America deserved the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks, and condoned suicide bombings against Americans in Iraq. He is also charged with making death threats on various websites against others.

Krekar's lawyer, Brynjar Meling, said his client stands by what he said, but he had not broken the law.

"It should not be looked upon as threats," Meling told The Associated Press on the eve of the trial, adding that it would be "a test case" for drawing the line between Norwegian terror laws and freedom of speech.

The trial is expected to last three weeks.

Diana Williams

Diana Williams

Fernwood Fitness

Self-made and down to earth fitness mogul Diana Williams got off the starting blocks early, beginning a very successful chain of fitness franchises back in the eighties, when the gym was dominated by sweaty, grunting men. Inspired by the effect that light resistance training had on her own body, Diana realised a gap in the market for weight training that focused on women. Despite resistance and scepticism from potential investors and banks Williams, accompanied by local fitness centre manager John Clow, took a gamble and pumped her own savings into her very own first gym.

A successful empire grew from these humble beginnings, and franchises of the Fernwood Woman?s Health Club sprung up across Australia. The empire has not developed without its problems, and Williams struggled with adapting her business to suit the franchise model it follows to this day. There are now an amazing 74 such Fernwood Gyms across Australia and the number is rising steadily. Many offer additional lifestyle advice and inspiring programs, geared to changing the way women look at their relationship with their bodies and exercise. Williams is now a much respected fitness consultant, approached by government and other public bodies on issues of health and fitness that effect women.

Fernwood empowers women to shine through pioneering health and fitness programs and expert advice. Mining

Gina Rinehart

Gina Rinehart

Hancock Prospecting

Gina Rinehart is not only an Aussie female entrepreneur; she happens to be the country?s richest person, and if recent reports turn out to be correct, is fast on track to becoming the wealthiest person in the world. With an estimated personal fortune of $10.3 billion (AUD), Gina is benefactor to her fathers? multi-million pound mining empire, Hancock Prospecting, which turns over just under a billion AUD every year.

But her successes are her own. After her father?s passing, Hancock Prospecting was forced to liquidate and mortgage assets to cover mounting debt. The breakthrough came when she entered into a joint venture with Rio Tinto that saw her net profit surpass her fathers total accumulative wealth in a single year, showing that the apple does not fall far from the tree, perhaps only shines a little brighter and tastes a little sweeter.

The powerful business woman learnt the ropes of her father?s business from the bottom up, which is why her climb to the top is such an achievement ? although, it does help if your dad is the boss. After her fathers? death, Rinehart decided to pay tribute to him, and to the legacy that his mining company had left to the region of Pilbara. Instead of erecting a nice tomb stone or perhaps dedicating a tree to dad Lang Hancock, Rinehart did what every good daughter should and named an entire mountain range after her father ? The Hancock Range.

Gina is also a prominent figure in certain environmental political circles, and is a notorious climate change sceptic and supporter of climate change deniers? activities.

Therese Rein

Therese Rein

Ingeus

International employment guru Therese Rein certainly clocks up the airmiles. Her worldwide employment business Ingeus spans almost half the world, has offices in 100 countries, and is particularly successful in the United Kingdom. The independent wife of former Australian PM Kevin Rudd continued to work whilst he was in office, making her the first woman to do so in the history of Australia.

This busy mum and female entrepreneur still makes time for her family ? she has three children with Rudd ? and manages to squeeze in plenty of charity work. Much of her inspiration derives from the fact that her father was injured in a plane crash while flying for the Australian Air Force. This has driven her passion for rehabilitation and helping those who are disadvantaged enter the workforce. Therese has also won the prestigious Human Rights Medal for her work with the disabled.

It?s hard to see where this busy woman fits in time for her family, never mind time for herself. Rein was the first prime minister?s wife to keep her own surname and maintain her very own identity, so she deserves the kudos, and is living proof that women can have it all, and more.

Igneus has recently re-entered the Australian marketplace with the acquisition of Assure Programs, a business psychology services provider offering specialised organisational development services and employee assistance programs that are both designed and delivered by their team of registered psychologists.

Julia Ross

Julia Ross

Ross Human Directions

A real example of a self-made career woman who has climbed her way to the top, Julia Ross is a true inspiration to all. Instead of wallowing in self pity and reaching for a bowl of ice cream after separating from her husband, Julia, who was pregnant at the time, decided to launch a recruitment business, which has gone on to become one of Australia?s most successful.

By 2010, Ross Human Directions was generating a revenue of around $400 million and soon gained the eye of potential buyers. The company was taken over at the end of 2010 by Chandler Macleod, who insisted Ross resign as part of the bid. Of course, she pocketed the very handsome sum of $26 million as a result of the takeover, so things didn?t turn out too badly.

Topped with her already vast personal wealth ? recorded to be $75 million back in 2003 ? Ross stands out amongst the handful of other women on Australia?s rich list, having achieved her fortune completely by herself. Not bad for a women who 20 odd years ago had nowhere to live. Despite her success, Julia remains unaffected by her wealth, claiming only to have wanted to provide a decent upbringing for her son. And, despite having created an empire out of nothing, Julia still claims to feel that men dominate big business in Australia, and has been involved in trying to change the current situation. Looks like there?s a long way to go to breaking the glass ceiling, but with women like Julia leading the way no doubt changes will come sooner rather than later.

She is also committed to ensuring her staff feels valued, and that there is a positive work ethic. She even devotes a few hours a day to checking in with her staff to ensure they?re happy with everything.

The idea for Phone Zone, as the Vita Group is also known, came on a trip back to Maxine?s native UK. There, she realised that no one was selling mobile phones in a retail capacity back in Australia, and she, along with her husband, decided to take the market down under.

Beginning the company in her home whilst pregnant with her first child, Maxine has seen Phone Zone expand beyond expectations. Jan Cameron, creator of Kathmandu outdoor wear and accessories is, thanks to her empire, one of the richest women in Australia and New Zealand. She?s notorious for her clear-headed, quick-thinking business decisions, a trait that must have helped her enormously when she began her forage into the strongly masculine outdoor equipment market in the dark days of the 1970s.

Having sold the business in 2006, Jan netted a very respectable $230 million, and managed to hold on to 49 percent of the company. Not a bad result! Since the sale, although most thought she was settling down for retirement years in Tasmania Ms Cameron instead bought out Australian Discount Retail Group in 2009, who went into administration. The chain were responsible for around 350 discount variety stores under the brand names Go-Lo, Crazy Clarks and Sam?s Warehouse, but their Tasmanian Chickenfeed stores remained profitable, and continues to do well under the management of Jan Cameron. In fact, it?s doing so well, as it?s business owner, that 100 percent of profits are donated to charity. Something that is not common knowledge and will surely drive consumers to the store, and also something that goes to show many entrepreneurs are not just business people, but philanthropists too.

Set up in 2000, and now employing almost 100 members of staff, Gillian is proud to have seen the business grow from a home start-up to the thriving company it is today. Now worth almost $80 million, the company is at the forefront of women?s cosmetics in Australia. Gillian?s shrewd business planning, advanced thinking and can do attitude have convinced many, including industry giant Proctor and Gamble, that her company is the way forward. And, she?s just about convinced us too.

Jo Horgan

Jo Horgan

Cosmetics Cubed

London born and bred Jo, like Franklin, learned the tricks of the cosmetics trade whilst working for an industry giant (L?Oreal) in the UK and Australia. Whilst abroad, Jo realised there was a gap in the Australian cosmetics market for high quality, niche products, and thus her company Cosmetics Cubed, which incorporates the Mecca Cosmetica brand.

With 30 stores across Oz and New Zealand, Mecca Cosmetica leads the way in women?s cosmetics. Like many of the successful women on this list, Horgan keeps herself to herself, but her products, which include her own branded ranges, are known to women and teenage girls throughout Australia.

Jo claims most of her business planning was done on long haul flights, but it turned out the ideas were more than just pie in the sky fantasy. Having built her business up and successfully passed the 10 year mark, Jo remains grounded, quoting her best achievements as her family, and speaking at industry conferences in front of some of the world big names in the beauty world. She also enjoys travelling and meeting her suppliers and business contacts. At least she?ll have to hand plenty of creams and lotions to hide any jet lag and fatigue.

Charlotte Vidor

Charlotte Vidor

Toga Group

Joint owner of the massive Toga Group, Vidor has her finger in a lot of business-flavoured pies. Valued alongside her husband at $440 million, Vidor?s company is involved mainly in the hospitality chain, but also fund management, the environment and property management, and includes the Medina and Vibe brands.

Spanning 45 years, the company hires almost 2000 people and has exported the brand to Europe and elsewhere. The business portfolio includes hundreds of hotels, apartments and businesses, including Travel Lodge Australia and New Zealand, and many others.

Given the companies interests, it?s no surprise that Vidor has a heavy interest in the Australian tourist industry, and is a strong advocate for the development of the sector. She played a prominent role whilst a member of the New South Wales Tourism Board, and developed the concept of fully-serviced business apartments way back in 1982.

Unfortunately for Charlotte, a pitiful net worth of $440 million means she just scrapes into fourth position on Australia?s rich list. Shame.

Emma Isaacs

Emma Isaacs

Business Chicks

Emma Isaacs is a busy, busy woman, and loves it. She is a long time entrepreneur, having never worked for anyone else ? apart from a few coffee shops during her teens ? and manages to juggle mommyhood with business quite nicely.

At just 18, Emma started her first business, a recruitment company, and by the age of 28 had bought four other businesses and sold one. One of her companies, Business Chicks, is an online community for business women in Australia wanting to connect with likeminded career women. Their ethos is to empower working women, whether from small home-based businesses or a large multinational corporation, through sharing ideas, knowledge and skills. Competitiveness is shunned ? although that must be hard with a group of strong-willed women ? and peer encouragement is embraced, with the aim of achieving better business results, while trying not to take it all too seriously. There are chances to meet up in real life, too, during national events programs, fundraising ventures and other initiatives. Ranging from the ages of 25 to 65, around 25,000 business women have joined the community so far.

When not in the throes of organising Business Chicks, Emma is an Ambassador for 1 Million Women, writes a regular column for Latte, the Business Chicks magazine, and has only recently given up the Presidency of the Sydney-based Entrepreneur?s Organisation.

Clare Lancaster

Clare Lancaster

Women in Business

As Clare says: ?When most people think of the words ?women in business? they think of women in 80?s power suits, or women climbing the corporate ladder while figuring out the balance between work and family.? But things have changed, and Clare is key to that change.

Putting her background in Communication Design and SEO to good use, partnered with her experience in affiliate marketing and search and domain monetisation, Clare founded Dot Marketing. There, through strategy workshops, online business owners and bloggers with a business model learn how SEO, social media and marketing can benefit their business.

Helping online business owners is something Clare is passionate about, and her new venture Women in Business reflects that. It stemmed from wanting a life where work, home and play mingle easily, where women can have it all, do what they love, without having to give up too many things to be successful. If Clare?s success is anything to go by, she seems to know what she?s talking about.

Catriona Pollard

Catriona Pollard

CP Communications

With such an established career in developing and managing public relations and marketing programs, it was only a matter of time before Catriona would utilise her diverse skills to go it alone. In 2001, she set up CP Communications, a Sydney-based boutique PR agency, and hasn?t looked back since.

Part of her repertoire is to manage public affairs and marketing for the federal and state governments, which must provide a few challenges, to say the least, and she regularly authors articles on PR and marketing for a number of business journals. Catriona is also tipped as one of the top 100 people in PR to follow on Twitter, where she is active most days, and she is co-founder of Social Media Women ? an online networking group that assists and encourages women to get more involved in social media.

Helen Logas

Helen Logas

Travelcorp

It?s not often you hear of a high school teacher making the big bucks, well, not if they stay in education. A passion for travel coupled with a strong desire to be her own boss saw Helen Logus leave the teaching ranks and join the madness of entrepreneurism.

In 1994, Helen started her corporate travel business Travelcorp and within a year was in the position to employ commission-based staff and undertake a targeted advertising campaign. In 2003, Travelcorp was awarded ?Best Corporate Travel Agent? at the National Travel Industry Awards for Excellence, and by 2010 the company had a recorded revenue of $65 million, with an average annual growth of 38 percent.

Her obvious knack for negotiating and seeking out a deal played a key role in the growth of her business, but so too did the technology behind Travelcorp?s booking system, which was customizable to each client. This allowed corporate clients to not only retain a certain amount of control of their travel plans, but also analyse their costs and spending patterns over the year.

The biggest deal of her life was to come when, in 2010, Helen was approached by Corporate Travel Management (CTM) with an offer for the company. By the end of that year Helen was a whole lot richer and freed up to pursue her next venture, which should be due to launch any time soon.

Suzy Jacobs

Suzy Jacobs

SHE Business

Having worked for many years in large corporations, Suzy Jacobs was keen to test the waters of the small business world and do something which demanded her real passions ? building relationships and women in business. In 2009, she brought the UK?s Athena Network to Australia ? the Athena Network provides business women with opportunities to make strategic connections with other professionals and encourages members to develop their business potential through a series of workshops. Now Suzy has gleaned from her past experiences and set up her own community for business women within Australia.

Toted as ?the new kind of business club for women?, SHE Business offers a holistic approach to success based on a gender science model developed from months of research. Sounds fancy, but what it means is that the SHE Business recognises that women work quite differently from men in the business world, and therefore have different needs.

SHE Business offers members various paths to professional success through a range of events led by other successful female entrepreneurs. There are numerous opportunities to network ? although Suzy is keen to label it as ?nurturing not networking? ? and lively discussion and debate are positively encouraged so that others may draw on collective experience.

Finalists in AusMumpreneur of the Year 2011

Laura Trotta

Laura Trotta

Sustainababy

It?s often true that if you want something done you may as well do it yourself. When environmental professional Laura Trotta was pregnant with her son Matthew she spent hours researching where she could find sustainable products and clothes, but found that the items while available were not collected in one place. This led her to start her own online business Sustainababy just last year, and so far it?s a great success.

Offering one of the most comprehensive selections of organic and eco-friendly baby and children?s products, Sustainababy is a valuable resource for environmentally conscious parents. A large portion of the items available have been either designed or made in Australia or New Zealand, too.

Laura?s previous professional experience as an environmental engineer reducing the environmental impact of large organisations has meant she was able to not only transfer her knowledge to the online world, but is able to help others to lessen their family?s environmental impact whether they?re aware of it or not ? a certain portion of the profits of sales goes to towards the regeneration of degraded South Australian landscapes. Customers also have the opportunity to offset emissions for delivery of their goods, a first in terms of service in online stores in Australia.

Laura is constantly loading new products and brands on the site and is pleased to welcome new products from Petit Collage and Apple & Bee in addition to new season stock from Purebaby, Baobab and Cheeky Little Soles. Laura is also pleased to announce that Sustainababy has expanded to now cater for children aged up to 6 years rather than just toddlers as was the case in the past.

You also can check out the following offers from Sustainababy

  • They have their FINAL summer clearance on now (until mid Feb) where most of their summer stock is reduced by 50%.
  • Autumn/Winter stock will all be available in the online store from mid March.
  • They will be continuing to post eco-parenting articles written by environmental professionals (who are also parents) on their blog. As the only eco-parenting store operated by environmental professionals, they really are the credible information resource out there.
  • Sustainababy?s Facebook fans enjoy tuning into daily eco-parenting tip where they get the latest and greatest ideas to help them build a more sustainable lifestyle.
  • They will be running an eco-tip competition during March through their blog and Facebook page which gives the fans the opportunity to submit their best eco tip for the chance to WIN a $250 Sustainababy voucher. Details will be released by week end.

Michelle Wright

Michelle Wright

Mishfit

The path to achieving professional success is not always easy. There are peaks and troughs along the way, which mostly make us stronger; some stronger than others. It was a after a personal setback that Michelle Wright found her strength and carved a totally new, successful career.

Michelle is the owner of Mishfit, a personal training service that educates and provides safe exercise care to pregnant and post-natal women. It means women, especially those with a gym phobia, can partake in exercise when they need it most without having to worry what they look like, and in the knowledge that their trainer is specifically trained to meet their needs.

Spurred on by a bout of post-natal depression that was only remedied with exercise, Michelle was quick to recognize that she would not have been the only new mum to feel that way. So she ditched the decision to go back to teaching and instead became a fitness guru, which surprised her more than anyone considering she had previously abhorred exercise.

Now, Mishfit is a growing business with franchise opportunities, and is pitted as a true child-friendly business ? Mishfit is one of the few exercise establishments that allows mothers to bring their children with them to classes, meaning they don?t have to worry about the added cost of child care; a rare find indeed.

Starting in February this year there is a new franchisee running Mishfit in Ringwood Victoria. Moreover, Michelle has also just released a new double CD Called Active Pelvic Practice ? The Gift of Inner Strength. This is to help women remember and to correctly contract their pelvic floors. It is available from either the Mishfit website or from iTunes.

Yvette Adams

Yvette Adams

The Creative Collective

Yvette Adams? quest for the ?ideal lifestyle? ? to be able to juggle her family and professional life ? was fulfilled much quicker than she thought. In 2007, Yvette decided to set up her online marketing services business, The Creative Collective, from home so she could still spend time with her two young children, yet within six months the increasing demand for web marketing meant she was able to employ five contractors.

The Creative Collective recognises that business owners can?t possibly do it all themselves and so provides a platform for outsourcing certain components of the business, from website design and SEO management to social media and market research, to highlight a few of the services available.

The company?s success was evident very quickly and by December 2009, the company was granted Federal Government funding through the AusIndustry Small Business Online in conjunction with TRAC Consulting, which has led to The Creative Collective being able to research and develop a wide range of webinars, full day events and e-lessons to business owners in the Whitsunday, Bundaberg and Sunshine Coast regions.

Now Yvette manages a team of 25 contractors in addition to a small team of permanent staff, and services clients locally, nationally and internationally. All that and she still manages to find time for her family, which is part and parcel of being a female entrepreneur.

The Creative Collective hosts a stack of full-day workshops and webinars (online seminars) offering key advice on how to run a successful online business. Yvette is a a regular guest speaker at many of these events. Visit the Creative Collectives events page for details of all upcoming events.
